World Food Safety Day 2025: FAO and WHO Unveil Theme and Launch Campaign with a New Toolkit Available in Six Languages

Keep an eye out for the 2025 World Food Safety Day launch on March 7! The team behind World Food Safety Day will soon be releasing a “Get started Toolkit” that will include details on this year’s theme as well as the posters, social media cards, and other resources you can use to plan, take part in, and publicize World Food Safety Day events. It will be available in all six United Nations languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have announced the theme for World Food Safety Day in 2025. The annual June 7 campaign seeks to motivate action and increase public awareness of the significance of food safety.

World Food Safety Day 2025 Theme

The theme for this year is “Food safety: science in action,” which highlights the need to apply scientific knowledge to prevent disease, save money, and save lives.

“Food Safety: Science in Action” is the theme and campaign for 2025’s World Food Safety Day (WFSD), which is jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). WFSD has been celebrated on June 7 every year since 2018 to increase awareness of the significance of food safety.

The World Food Safety Day (7 June) campaign has been formally launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). This year’s theme, “Food Safety: Science in action,” highlights the critical role that science plays in ensuring the safety of food.

WFSD 2025 emphasizes how important science is to the advancement of knowledge and research to ensure food safety. To protect food at every level, the campaign also highlights how important it is for all parties involved—governments, businesses, and consumers—to put that knowledge into practice through effective policies, practices, and responsible decisions.

Top FAO/WHO food safety authorities said in a video message declaring the subject of WFSD 2025, “It is not only the knowledge of science that keeps our food safe. It is rather our actions—actions based on the guidance and advice developed by scientists—that ensure that our food is safe.”

The motto for World Food Safety Day remains the same: food safety is everyone’s business. As always, the celebrations will center on an important aspect of food safety and highlight the ways that it is something that should worry us all.

FAO and WHO have been working together since 2018 to increase public awareness of food safety, stressing that action is more important than information.

This year’s campaign emphasizes how important research is to food safety and urges governments, corporations, and consumers to use scientific advice in daily decisions, policies, and practices to protect food at every stage.

On April 7, there will also be a “Get ready webinar” for anyone interested in listening to the FAO and WHO World Food Safety Day teams talk about this year’s theme and answer any questions.

To help stakeholders organize WFSD activities and communications, FAO/WHO has published a WFSD toolkit in six languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

A communication toolkit was produced by the two organizations to help food safety advocates around the world prepare their World Food Safety Day activities. There are six UN languages accessible for use and distribution of all campaign materials. This year’s World Food Safety Day theme is introduced by Dr. Corinna Hawkes, director of FAO’s Food Systems and Food Safety Division, and Dr. Luz María de Regil, director of WHO’s Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, in the campaign launch video.

On April 7, 2025, FAO/WHO will also host a webinar to discuss the theme and available communications resources for WFSD 2025.

A webpage of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission provides details on the WFSD 2025 theme and campaign, along with connections to the toolkit, webinar, and other resources.
