The 20th World Athletics Indoor Championships is scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 March 2025 in Nanjing, People’s Republic of China, at the newly constructed Nanjing’s Cube gymnasium located in the Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park.
The track and field realm is poised for its inaugural significant global competition following the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where over 500 competitors will illuminate the World Athletics Indoor Championships Nanjing 2025. A total of 576 athletes from 127 nations are anticipated to participate, including 11 individual defending champions and 20 medalists from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
No fewer than 120 countries are dispatching teams to the three-day event (21-23 March), with 26 gold medals available at the Nanjing Sports Training Centre in the People’s Republic of China.
Six Olympic champions from Paris 2024 – Mondo Duplantis, Grant Holloway, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Miltiadis Tentoglou, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, and Hamish Kerr – are among the prominent athletes confirmed to compete.
Defending champions Devynne Charlton, Molly Caudery, and Hugues Fabrice Zango are also prepared to make their return to the world indoor arena.

Shortly after thrilling competitions at the European Championships in Apeldoorn, the world’s foremost athletes gather in Nanjing as they embark on their pursuit of indoor supremacy, leading up to another significant event in Asia – the outdoor World Athletics Championships in Tokyo – scheduled for September.
Olympic champion Mondo’s fourth event of the season is anticipated to be a standout performance. With a formidable men’s pole vault lineup expected in Nanjing, the Swede will be eager to surpass the bar at 6. 28m, potentially marking his 12th consecutive world record after exceeding the 6. 27m mark in France last February.
Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis and Sam Kendricks will also participate in the Peoples Republic of China, where Mondo aims to secure his third consecutive world indoor title.
Another world record holder confirmed for Nanjing is Ukraine’s high jump champion Mahuchikh, who recently achieved her third consecutive European women’s title.
On the track, the women’s 60m event warrants attention, featuring world leader Zaynab Dosso, who boasts a time of 7. 01, an Italian record. Poland’s Ewa Swoboda and Swiss athlete Mujinga Kambundji will also be contending for the short sprint championship.
Christian Coleman’s absence from the men’s 60m signifies that a new world indoor champion will emerge in Nanjing. The three-time American winner has chosen to forgo the indoor season this year, leaving compatriot Ronnie Baker as the top qualifier ahead of the surprising European Indoors champion Jeremiah Azu of Great Britain.
In the men’s 60m hurdles, the question is whether anyone can halt two-time world indoor gold medalist Holloway as he seeks another dominant campaign.
Devynne Charlton, the first Bahamian woman to medal in the 60m hurdles at the World Indoors, will also be vying for further historical achievements.
In the longer distances, Jakob Ingebrigsten is the athlete to watch as he aims for victories in both the 1500m and 3000m after his remarkable fourth consecutive European double. The Norwegian is the frontrunner in the shorter of the two distances and is also a competitor to observe in the 3000m, where he narrowly qualified with a time of 7:48. 37 from the Europeans.
In the longer race, he will face the Ethiopian duo of Biniam Mehary, the world under-20 record holder for the 3000m, and Berihu Aregawi, the Olympic 10,000m silver medalist.
Kenya’s emerging women’s 800m contender Lilian Odira, who gained recognition last year by defeating world champion Mary Moraa in the national Olympic Trials, is back in pursuit of a global title following her major championship debut at the Paris 2024 Games.
The current world record holder for the women’s 5000m, Gudaf Tsegay, is the leading candidate for the 1500m title. The Ethiopian, who also holds the 10,000m world championships, will aim to reclaim the world indoor title she last secured in Belgrade after finishing with silver in Glasgow last year.
The home team’s primary aspiration for a medal rests upon shot putter Lijiao Gong, a ten-time world medallist in both indoor and outdoor championships.
Continuing with the field events, two-time Olympic champion Tentoglou is striving for consecutive world indoor titles in the men’s long jump, while Italian Mattia Furlani will seek to elevate his silver medal from Glasgow. Andy Diaz, another recently minted Euro indoor champion from Italy, is keeping an eye on Burkinabe star Zango as he bids to defend his triple jump title.
