Washington quarterback Will Rogers returns to the transfer portal
Washington quarterback Will Rogers put his name into the transfer portal on Friday night for the second time in the previous two months.
On November 27, Rogers, having transferred from Mississippi State, first entered his name in the database. Rogers first accessed the portal on November 13, following the dismissal of his coach, Zach Arnett, and the hiring of Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby in his place.
He made his transfer to Washington known on December 15 and appeared to be Michael Penix Jr.’s replacement at quarterback under Kalen DeBoer.
Rogers attended the school and even watched the team that would become his new team from the sidelines during the national championship game against Michigan while wearing a Washington jersey.
Then, on Friday, two days after Nick Saban’s retirement, DeBoer accepted the position of head coach at Alabama, and Rogers is once more in the portal.
Due in part to a temporary restraining order issued by a federal judge in West Virginia, who granted immediate eligibility to college athletes who had to sit out a year due to the NCAA’s previous policy for players who transferred more than once, he has the opportunity to switch again, which will officially be considered his second transfer. The NCAA then declared that if a player transferred more than once, they would be eligible to play in 2024 right away, provided they did so before the 2023–24 academic year ended. According to that regulation, Rogers is free to transfer to another school.
Along with tight end Tre Watson, safety Mishael Powell, linebacker Ethan Barr, and cornerback Jabbar Muhammad of the All-PAC-12 second team, he was the fifth player from Washington to access the transfer portal on Friday.
Penix goes down at quarterback for Washington, and Will Haskell and Dylan Morris have entered the transfer portal. There won’t be much room for the quarterback because Rogers is also in the portal, should he choose to transfer. The roster won’t have much experience at the position if Rogers leaves, even though the staff signed four-star Austin Mack in the 2023 class.
