Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World 2022 for Total Passenger Traffic

With 93.7 million passengers passing through its gates in 2022, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has maintained its position as the busiest airport in the world, a 23.8% increase from the previous year.

As borders reopened in March 2022 after two years of closures, marking a significant milestone in the air travel industry’s recovery from the pandemic, London Heathrow Airport rose from the 54th position in the rankings to the top spot.

The gains made by the world’s busiest airports reflected the recovery in international travel. The Airports Council International (ACI) World has released preliminary data indicating that global passenger traffic will reach close to 7 billion in 2022, an increase of 53.5 percent from the previous year and a recovery of 73.8 percent from 2019.

2022 Passenger Traffic

In 2022, the number of passengers traveling around the world was close to 7 billion, up 53.5 percent from the previous year and 73.8% from 2019. Atlanta Airport was followed by Dallas Fort Worth Airport, Denver Airport, Chicago O’Hare Airport, and Atlanta Airport rounded out the top four.

The United States has five of the top ten busiest airports in the world, with significant domestic passenger shares between 75% and 95%. With a gain of 51.7 percent from 2021, the top 10 airports for total passenger traffic, which account for 10% of global traffic, achieved a recovery of 85.9% from 2019 results.

However, passenger traffic increased significantly at airports outside of the United States. Dubai Airport achieved the fifth spot in the Global rankings as well as topped the list concerning international passengers, with 66.1 million passengers going through its gates, a 127% expansion from the earlier year. The number of passengers traveling through Istanbul Airport and London Heathrow Airport also significantly increased, propelling them to the seventh and eighth positions, respectively.

Dubai International Airport remained the world’s busiest airport for international passengers for the ninth year in a row.

“The new top 10 busiest airports for passenger traffic reflects the resilience of the airport and aviation industry and the eagerness of passengers to travel by air. While US airport hubs were able to recover quicker due to their strong domestic market, we are now witnessing global hubs joining upper ranks—including Dubai, Istanbul, and London Heathrow Airport,” ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira said.

Aircraft Movement

The global aircraft movement in 2022 was near 89 million, denoting an increase of 20.4% from the earlier year’s results. This recovery is significant because it represents 82.5 percent of levels in 2019 prior to the pandemic.

With 724,145 aircraft movements, which is a 2.3% increase from 2021, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport tops the list, which should come as no surprise. However, it still falls short of its 2019 results, which showed a 19.9% decrease to 904,000 aircraft movements. Dallas Fort Worth Airport and Chicago O’Hare Airport came in second and third, respectively.

The top 10 airports for aircraft movements, which account for close to 7% of global traffic, saw an increase of 11.4% from their results in 2021, rising to 91.5% from their results in 2019, which saw 6.2 million movements.

2022 Cargo Traffic

It is assessed that the volume of air freight encountered a downfall of 6.7% year-over-year, which addresses very nearly 117 million metric tons in 2022. This is a decrease of 1.7% contrasted with 2019.

With a volume of 4.2 million metric tonnes, Hong Kong Airport topped the list, followed by Memphis Airport and Anchorage Airport, which both saw declines of 16.4%. Anchorage Airport defeated Shanghai Pudong Airport to move up to the fourth place.

The top 10 airports for air cargo traffic, which represents around 27% or 30.8 million metric tonnes of global in 2022, encountered a decline of 9.9% year-over-year, despite the fact that there was as yet an increase of 4.1% contrasted with 2019 results. The ongoing geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global trade and supply chains are to blame for this decline.

In conclusion, the world’s busiest airport rankings for 2022 show that the aviation industry is gradually recovering from the effects of the pandemic. The world’s top airports have seen significant improvements in passenger traffic, aircraft movements, and air cargo volumes despite the difficulties posed by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and disruptions to global trade.

These airports’ resilience and adaptability point to a promising future for air travel, even as the aviation industry continues to adjust to the shifting global scenario.
