The Top Things You Need to Do in Case of a Bike Accident or Injury

Everywhere around the globe, more and more people are riding bikes, and for good reason. Biking is not only a fun and relaxing activity that anyone can enjoy – it’s also a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to cars or other vehicles. There’s no doubt that there are more biking aficionados nowadays, and they are all taking advantage of the benefits of biking when it’s incorporated into their routine. But, as always, it’s best to be safe. You also need to protect yourself while biking, and if you ever get into a bike accident or acquire an injury, it pays to know What to Do After a Bicycle Accident. So what are the top things you need to do in case of a bike accident or injury? Let’s find out.

The basics of biking

Biking is one of the most popular modes of transport in Europe, and in the UK, millions of individuals cycle every day. While it is indeed a great way to stay fit, save money on transport, and help the environment, it doesn’t come without its risks, particularly on the road, as this is when accidents can occur most often. And it’s true whether you are an experienced cyclist or just starting as a beginner: you need to know what to do in case of a bike accident or injury. Of course, with the right safety precautions and the ideal safety gear, you are already helping yourself. But what if the accident is the fault of another party? A bike accident or injury caused by a driver or pedestrian is another matter, and you can seek compensation. But first things first: in case of an accident or injury, here’s what you must do:

Assess the situation

The first thing you must do after a bike accident is to assess the situation. Check yourself (and others) for any injuries, and contact emergency services if necessary. You have to move to a safer place and try to stay calm. Once you have taken stock of everyone and are calmer, take photos of the accident scene, including any damage to your bike or other vehicles. Also, get the contact details of any witnesses to the accident.

Seek medical attention

If you (or anyone else) have suffered an injury, seek medical attention. Even if the injuries are minor, it still needs medical care, as some injuries may not immediately show symptoms. Go to the hospital (or see a GP) as soon as possible. And if you have injuries that require treatment, keep all the related receipts, medical records, and other documents.

Report the accident to the authorities

If the accident involves another vehicle, you must report the accident to the authorities. If the authorities cannot reach the scene, you can report the accident at a police station within 24 hours or online. You will need to provide your information and the details of the other driver and witnesses, if any. Also, get the police incident number and keep it for future reference.

Claim compensation

If you were injured due to someone else’s negligence, you might be entitled to claim compensation. Seek legal advice from a personal injury solicitor – they will evaluate your case and advise you on the best course of action.
