At the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo will make a sensational comeback to front-line Formula 1 racing. The Australian driver is set to take over for Nyck de Vries at the AlphaTauri team for the rest of the season.
Today, Ricciardo participated in a Pirelli tire test while driving Red Bull’s current RB19 car at Silverstone.
However, it has been declared that Ricciardo, who is currently Red Bull’s third driver, will replace De Vries at AlphaTauri beginning in Hungary.
“I am stoked to be back on track with the Red Bull family!” said Ricciardo of his new posting after impressing in his Silverstone test.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Daniel back into the team,” commented Franz Tost, AlphaTauri Team Principal. “There’s no doubt about his driving skills, and he already knows many of us, so his integration will be easy and straightforward. The team will also profit a lot from his experience, as he is an eight-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner.”
De Vries, a Dutch driver who drove for Williams in a one-time race at Monza last year and finished ninth, has had a difficult first season of full-time Formula One racing. He has yet to score, and AlphaTauri is rooted to the bottom of the constructors’ standings.
After 10 Grands Prix, he was replaced by eight-time race winner Daniel Ricciardo, who lost his drive with McLaren at the end of 2022 after two difficult seasons with the team. Ricciardo will re-join the Faenza-based squad with which he spent two seasons in 2012 and 2013 before being promoted to Red Bull for 2014.
After winning seven races for Red Bull, Ricciardo signed with Renault for two seasons beginning in 2019 and then joined McLaren in 2021.
In recent interviews, Ricciardo had expressed his desire to return to a full-time F1 seat, as the Australian driver recently stated: “Right now, I do want to get back on the grid next year. I do feel like there’s certainly some unfinished business. I’m staying in the loop and staying prepared.”
Meanwhile, Ricciardo will compete in his first race back at the track where he won the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix, his second career F1 victory.
