It’s no secret that Minecraft is one of the most successful and best-selling video games ever. Even those who are tech-averse are aware of this pop culture phenomenon. But it has been more than two years since Mojang Studios last provided gamers with information about how many copies of Minecraft have been bought since the game’s debut in May 2009. That is different now.
Mojang Studios announced that Minecraft recently sold over 300 million copies at this year’s Minecraft Live event. That preserves Minecraft in its place as the best-selling video game and puts an unbelievable amount of games in the hands of players worldwide. The noteworthy accomplishment occurs as Mojang Studios is ready to commemorate Minecraft’s 15th birthday in May 2024.
“As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks,” said Helen Chiang, head of Mojang Studios. “Our incredible community has built Minecraft into what it is today and what it will become in the future. We can’t wait to share new Minecraft content and experiences in the years ahead.”
As a point of comparison, Mojang Studios last disclosed in April 2021 that Minecraft had sold over 238 million copies, with more franchise figures announced later in the same year. Although Minecraft Dungeons did achieve over 25 million unique players ten months after it went end-of-life, there has been nothing since then on that front.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there. Announcing that 2024 will be dedicated to celebrating Minecraft’s 15th anniversary, Mojang Studios’ Lydia Winters teased intriguing future ideas on the stage of Minecraft Live. Even while we don’t yet know how Mojang will mark Minecraft’s 15th anniversary, you can bet it will be a lavish event befitting a game with more than 300 million copies sold and more than a decade of experience.
As we mark our 15th year, we at Minecraft want to express our gratitude to our passionate Minecraft community. Our community’s creativity and dedication have helped shape this world into something extraordinary,” said Kayleen Walters, head of franchise development at Mojang Studios. “As we kick off this milestone year, we eagerly look forward to honoring and celebrating your contributions, stories, and adventures. Thank you for 15 amazing years of crafting, building, and exploring together. Stay tuned for more updates and surprises in 2024!”
The Minecraft community is now buzzing about several other announcements as well. For all the most recent information about Minecraft and its expanding universe, keep checking Windows Central’s coverage of Minecraft Live 2023. Despite being one of the top Xbox games and having outsold virtually all other titles, Minecraft still cannot afford to remain. A lot will happen in 2024 and beyond.
