Matt Reeves’ The Batman sequel with Robert Pattinson set to return as Gotham’s fiercest defender
Warner Bros. and DC declared Tuesday night at CinemaCon that The Batman is officially getting a sequel by Matt Reeves, as Warner Bros. delivered the studio’s highly anticipated presentation. “The Batman” is getting a sequel, with Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Reeves, and the team set to return as Gotham’s fiercest defender.
The Batman will handle his next supervillain: make-up remover. During the Warner Bros. presentation at Cinema Con, WB declared that they had greenlit a sequel of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which came out earlier this year. While there is no set release date, Reeves gets back to write and direct the sequel featuring Robert Pattinson, repeating his role as the smokey-eyed Batman. Reeves thanked the audience for their “tremendous support” for the film during the presentation.
“We couldn’t have gotten here without the faith and enthusiasm of all your teams around the world. I’m excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter,” said Reeves to the Cinema Con attendees.
No word yet on the off chance that the rest of the cast will return; Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffery Wright, John Turturro, and Peter Sarsgaard are all featured in the first film. As updates keep on unfolding, the creative team has the opportunity to sort out how horny they can make the upcoming sequel.
Warner Bros. uncovered its plans for one more Caped Crusader story during its Tuesday evening presentation at CinemaCon, the annual trade show for theater owners. “The Batman” director Matt Reeves was close by to declare the news that he will write and direct the follow-up, yet he gave no insights concerning what the film will involve.
“The Batman,” a gritty three-hour superhero adventure, appeared on the big screen in March, starting with $134 million domestically. Those ticket sales rank as the biggest opening weekend of 2022, as well as just the second pandemic-era film to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend following “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” With $759 million to date at the global box office, “The Batman” is as of now the highest-grossing film of the year.
“Matt took one of our most iconic and beloved superheroes and delivered a fresh vision” Warner Bros. movie chief Toby Emmerich announced at CinemaCon. “Matt Reeves, Rob Pattinson, and the entire team will be taking audiences back to Gotham with The Batman 2.”
No release date was revealed.
The Batman, released in early March of this current year, proceeded to be a colossal basic and box office success. So far, it is the highest-grossing film of 2022, with a total worldwide take of $759 million.
Prominently, “The Batman” denoted a return to exclusive theatrical releases for Warner Bros. after the studio released its whole 2021 record all the while on HBO Max. Going ahead, Warner Bros. plans to save its new movies in cinemas for 45 days before putting its new titles on HBO Max. Its upcoming titles incorporate “Elvis” (June 24), “DC League of Super-Pets” (July 29), “Creed III” (Nov. 23), and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (Dec. 16).
“The Batman” took a grim (however PG-13) see Bruce Wayne’s earlier days as “the world’s greatest detective.” In his quest for justice, the young Dark Knight reveals corruption in Gotham City while chasing after the maniacal killer known as the Riddler (Paul Dano). The ritzy cast included Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Batman’s butler Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the crime-lord referred to as Penguin, and Jeffrey Wright as Gotham City’s police chief James Gordon. Notwithstanding blockbuster ticket sales, the film was generally embraced by pundits (it holds an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes), as well as audiences (it landed an “A-” CinemaScore).
The Batman,” chief film pundit Peter Debruge singled out Reeves for doing “something relatively unique here, at least by comic-book-movie standards.”
“This grounded, frequently brutal and nearly three-hour film-noir registers among the best of the genre, even if — or more aptly, because — what makes the film so great is its willingness to dismantle and interrogate the very concept of superheroes,” he wrote.
Alongside Bruce Wayne’s follow-up, Warner Bros. has a few DC properties in the works, including the animated “DC League of Super-Pets” (which hits theaters on July 29) and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (which opens on Dec. 22). Into the next year, Jason Momoa is returning for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (set for March 17) and Ezra Miller is featuring in “The Flash” (June 23).
Pattinson wore the cape and cowl for the first time as the notorious DC superhero. His initial adversaries included Riddler, played by Paul Dano, and Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, otherwise known as Penguin, played by Colin Farrell. Zoë Kravitz played Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, and Andy Serkis played Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler and mentor.
Days after The Batman opened, HBO Max focused on a straight-to-limited-series order for The Penguin, with Farrell repeating his role. The spinoff series will be executive produced by Reeves, Dylan Clark, Farrell, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan, and Lauren LeFranc, who will act as showrunner.
The news followed a previous appearance that saw The Batman movie producer Matt Reeves start the morning state-of-the-industry program by thanking cinema owners for keeping the “flicker of hope” alive when the pandemic struck. He said he trusts earnestly in the theatrical experience. “Helping to play a role in your success is very important to me,” said Reeves while noticing that Batman has acquired north of $700 million.
“The success of The Batman was a true team effort. We could not have gotten to this place without … the theatrical experience. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. As a lifelong fan of the movies, I treasure what you do,” Reeves told theaters earlier in the day at CinemaCon. “There’s a sanctuary to be found in the movies.”
The Batman is presently playing on HBO Max in the wake of making $759 million in theaters around the world, so it’s no big surprise that this new iteration of Batman is a top priority for WB & DC.
Moreover, a Penguin spinoff series is in progress for HBO Max, with Colin Farrell reprising the role. Another small screen The Batman spinoff is likewise coming to completion.
CinemaCon, the annual gathering of theater owners and Hollywood studios, runs April 25-28.
