Khurram and Co. Solicitors are a private largest Solicitors firm based in West Bromwich, Birmingham. Our core is the provision of legal services to the less advantaged sections of the local community.

This has dictated the areas of law covered, mainly immigration, criminal and civil litigation, family which are at a competitive private rate and the main sources of referrals from voluntary sector organisations such as charities and government funded centres.

We are based in the heart of West Midlands provide services in the surrounding geographical areas West Bromwich, Birmingham, Smethwick, Handsworth and Oldbury, a multinational community, mainly originating from the New Commonwealth.

The office is open 9:00am to 5:00pm weekdays and Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. There is an emergency telephone contact out of hours.  We provide home visits on request. In house languages are Urdu, Mirpuri, Hindi and Punjabi.  We have access to interpreters in all languages required.

Immigration and Asylum Law

Khurram and Co Solicitors Immigration Solicitors in West Bromwich team is able to assist with all Immigration, EEA, Nationality and Asylum matters. We have a wide range of clients based in the West Midlands area including, Birmingham, Walsall, Willenhall, Wolverhampton, Telford, Tipton, Tamworth and other areas outside the West Midlands including Aylesbury, Dewsbury, Dover, Manchester and London.

Visitor

If you are coming to the UK as a visitor, you are allowed to stay here for up to 6 months in most cases. To be allowed to enter or pass through the UK, you must meet certain requirements dependent on the category of visit visa you apply under.

You can visit the UK to:

  • See friends or for tourism
  • See family
  • Do business
  • To study
  • As a sportsperson
  • As an entertainer
  • Other reasons including to get married in the UK

Student

There are two subcategories to study in the UK under the Points Based System, Tier 4 (General) Student and Tier 4 (Child) Student. Those in the General subcategory are students aged 16 or over. The Child subcategory is for children aged from 4 to 17 who wish to be educated in the UK.

As a Tier 4 (General) or (Child) student, you must have 40 points. You can score:

30 points for having a valid confirmation of acceptance for studies, which you get for studying a course at an acceptable level with an approved education provider (also known as a ‘Tier 4 sponsor’), and for having acceptable English language skills; and

10 points for having enough money (also known as maintenance or funds) to cover your course fees and living costs.

There must also be suitable arrangements in place for your travel, reception and care in the UK if you are coming as a Child Student.

Once you have been accepted for a course of studies please contact us. We will then conduct a preliminary assessment to ensure that you meet the points requirements. We can then assist with the completion of the relevant application forms and the collation of the supporting documentation.

The application can then be submitted on your behalf and continuing support will be provided until you receive your decision.

Work

High-value migrants – Tier 1

Investors, entrepreneurs and exceptionally talented people can apply to enter or stay in the UK without needing a job offer – but you will need to pass a points-based assessment.

Applications can be made in the following categories:

  • Exceptional Talent – for people who are recognised or have the potential to be recognised as leaders in the fields of science and the arts.
  • Entrepreneur – for people who want to set up or take over, and be actively involved in running, a business or businesses here.
  • Investor – for people who want make a substantial financial investment in the UK.
  • General – for highly skilled workers.

Skilled Workers – Tier 2

If you are a national of a country outside the EEA or Switzerland (except Turkey), you will need to apply under Tier 2 of the points-based system. You must:

  • have a job offer from a licensed sponsor and a valid certificate of sponsorship; and
  • pass a points-based assessment.

Settlement

After you have lived in the UK for a certain length of time, you may be able to apply for permission to settle here. This is known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’.  There are numerous categories in which you can apply for settlement in the UK which include the following:

  • As the spouse/partner of a British Citizen or settled person
  • As the family member of a British Citizen or settled person
  • As the victim of domestic violence
  • As a retired person of independent means or a sole representative of an overseas firm
  • Other reasons
  • As refugees or people granted humanitarian protection since 30 August 2005, whose current 5-year permission to stay is due to expire.

European Nationals

Nationals of countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland need not apply for a visa to come to the UK. They and members of their families (whether or not they are EEA or Swiss nationals themselves) can come to, live in and work in the UK.

Applications can be made for documentation which recognises these rights such as:

  • EEA and Swiss nationals in the UK can apply for a residence document to confirm their rights of residence under European law.
  • Non-European family members of EEA and Swiss nationals need an EEA family permit before they can come to the UK
  • Non-European family members of EEA and Swiss nationals can, while they are in the UK, apply for documents to confirm their rights of residence under European law.
  • When you have lived in the UK for a continuous period of 5 years, you can apply for confirmation of permanent residence.

British Citizenship

British citizenship is one of the six different forms of British nationality. Some of these were defined in the British Nationality Act 1981, which came into force on 1 January 1983. The laws defining how citizenship can be obtained changed on that date.

On receiving your instructions we will conduct a detailed assessment of your personal circumstances to establish your nationality and whether you can apply for British Citizenship.  We can then assist with the completion of the relevant application forms and the collation of the supporting documentation.

The application can then be submitted on your behalf and continuing support will be provided until you receive your decision.

Asylum

Asylum is protection given by a country to someone who is fleeing persecution in their own country. It is given under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. To be recognised as a refugee, you must have left your country and be unable to go back because you have a well-founded fear of persecution.

If you want to apply for asylum and you are already in the UK, you will need to book an appointment to attend the UKBA asylum screening unit in Croydon.

We are able to provide legal aid to people who are applying for asylum and those who have already applied and need representation.  An assessment will need to be made following your instructions and our qualified solicitors can then advise and assist you with the application.
