The digital change does not stop at any industry. Digitization will also change the healthcare industry significantly in the coming years. This affects payers and service providers, but above all the insured and patients, who will play an active role as confident customers through digital solutions. Online pharmacies are attacking stationary pharmacies, Hospital 4.0 is relying on digital patient files, start-ups and entrepreneurs are building apps and solutions for an innovative health system. Leaders creating digital platforms challenging healthcare as we know it have one common denominator – they base their business strategy around innovation – in other words, doing something that has never been done before.
Over the years, healthcare platforms have reduced the hurdles faced by both patients and providers. Digital technologies enable more efficient care and greater access for everyone, including the most vulnerable populations: the elderly, chronically ill, low income and rural. Many companies are successfully adopting online telemedicine services to bridge this gap, including Allscripts, Epic, Meditech, and Adviise. Two of these companies, Allscripts and Adviise, are leading the charge.
Black has a long history in healthcare. His father was a hospital pharmacy director. In the earlier days of his career, Black worked at IBM learning hardware and software systems. Before Black became the CEO of Allscripts, he worked as a COO at Cerner incorporation, a leader in providing healthcare services. He was named the Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts in 2012.
Under his leadership, Allscripts achieved significant targets, and the company now serves over 45000 practicing physicians and 2500 hospitals across the globe. He introduced their company’s EHR System along with other digital healthcare solutions, impacting the healthcare industry.
Alizadeh – the CEO of Adviise – suffered a heart stroke at age 22. In navigating her own health crisis, she struggled to find access to better care in a system that was disorganized and full of redundancies. This experience pushed her into a market that needed help from the outside. Before launching Adviise in 2019, Alizadeh worked in the regulation, media, and technology. These sectors gave her the knowledgebase to build her own digital health platform. Adviise is a fully-integrated online medical service platform that provides a range of services like appointment bookings, storage for medical records, hosted telemedicine sessions, and payment for medical services.
Alizadeh’s belief that the future is one where universal access to healthcare and profit coexist. Her vision is to create a system where people can get diagnosed and treated fast, because in many cases, outcomes are based on time and access. Adviise is headquartered in Dallas with offices in New York and San Antonio.
Without an integrated innovation strategy, companies run the risk of making themselves irrelevant. In healthcare, patient access and knowledge is a constant source of struggle. Healthcare leaders have a significant role to play in making the experience more effective and efficient, leading to better outcomes. Companies providing out-of-the-box solutions and that have specific, clear priorities are poised to change the world.
Technology is changing customers’ experiences and how healthcare providers work.
Healthcare providers face a major challenge with the digitization of a complex system. This challenge will take up a rapidly growing share of the available investment budgets in the next few years. However, the cost consequences of digitization go far beyond the necessary investments. The decisions in the construction of a modern ICT later influence the costs for operation and further development.
For successful healthcare digitization, it is not enough to buy and introduce new systems. Too often, digital solutions do not deliver what they promise and result in more administration and less added value. The digital transformation must be patient-focused.
The overriding purpose of technology is always the well-being of the patient, both directly or indirectly. Therefore, modern technology should be developed in healthcare in interdisciplinary design teams that match the processes and structures. The procedure is analogous to the way in which buildings of the future are planned using integrated facility design.
Digital service design brings together patients, doctors, nurses, therapists, computer scientists and the other internal and external stakeholders of an institution. Together they decide how, where and when technology will change the way we work in the future. Health leaders create solutions that are geared towards the patients with an economically sensible and technologically feasible approach.
The digital transformation captures the entire value stream and all medical flows: patients and relatives, employees, information, medication, consumables, devices and the higher-level process logic. How far that goes is of course different. In a first step, the information and communication processes are usually affected. Thanks to advances in sensor technology and robotics, physical processes are also part of the change.
Digitalization is putting its stamp on healthcare. From the diagnosis of rare or chronic diseases to their therapy, online healthcare platforms are saving lives. In addition to conventional devices such as a dissection knife in the operating room or a blood pressure monitor, doctors are increasingly receiving support from digital helpers. With the help of big data analyzes and AI methods, it is possible to improve and personalize increasingly effective diagnostics and therapies.
