Google Workspace Gains Gemini AI Tool to Add Calendar Events from Gmail with “Add to Calendar” Button

Google Workspace users can now use a cool new Gmail feature driven by Google’s Gemini AI. Users will be able to add events directly from emails to a Google Calendar as of Monday. Using the Gemini AI bot, Google has revealed a new AI feature that adds events to your Google Calendar based on Gmail email information.

When Gemini finds calendar-related content in an email, it will automatically display a “Add to calendar” button. Once the button has been clicked, Gmail’s side panel will open to verify that the event has been added to the calendar.

A new “Add to Calendar” button will appear in emails that Gemini believes describe events, initiating the conversation. The Gemini prompt sidebar will open when you click it to verify that the event was added and to provide you with an edit button in case you need to make any changes. Events could already be added via Gemini’s side panel, but now everything is done automatically.

The feature is comparable to Google’s previous non-AI features, which included adding or updating Google Calendar events automatically in response to specific types of appointment or travel emails. The update is currently being made available to Google One AI Premium subscribers and Workspace users in the business, enterprise, and educational sectors, according to Google.

According to a blog post by Google, the feature is currently only accessible online and in English. Other guests won’t be included in a calendar event made using the “Add to calendar” button, and it won’t show up in emails that already extract events, such as bookings for restaurants and flights.

The new feature is available to users with Google Workspace Business and Enterprise tiers, as well as those with a Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium subscription plan. (Eligible users also include those who previously purchased the now-deprecated Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-ons.) Using the Workspace Admin console, administrators can activate “Add to Calendar” by switching on smart features and personalization.

The newest Gemini-powered tool to access Gmail inboxes is “Add to calendar.” Google updated Gmail on the web in June 2024 to include new features that allow users to create emails, summarize email threads, ask questions, and retrieve specific information from emails in an inbox. Toward the end of last year, some of those features were added to the Gmail apps for iOS and Android.

How the ‘Add to Calendar’ Button Works

This upgrade will cause Gmail to automatically identify emails with event-related information and provide a “Add to Calendar” button at the top. A sidebar verifying that Gemini has created an event in Google Calendar appears when the button is pressed. But the AI won’t send out invitations on its own.

To add them, you will, therefore, have to manually change the event.

Extra Features of the Latest Update

Not only can you add events to the calendar, but Google also includes a “Show me what’s on my calendar that day” button. This increases productivity and efficiency by enabling users to view their schedule with ease without ever leaving Gmail.

Editing and Confirmations

Google announced that the feature also includes an Edit option that allows users to modify event details if necessary. The absence of a confirmation prompt before adding an event, however, has been noted by early testers, allowing for potential unintended calendar entries.

Who Can Use This Feature?

Currently, the “Add to Calendar” button is only accessible in English and is only available in Gmail’s web version. As per Google, the following users will be able to use the feature:

  • Subscribers to Google One AI Premium
  • Workplace Business users
  • Education and Enterprise clients
  • Gemini’s Increasing Gmail Capabilities

In addition to adding events, Google’s Gemini AI is starting to play an essential role in Gmail’s operation. Writing professional emails, thank-you notes, follow-ups for job interviews, employee reviews, and customized well-wishes are just a few of the tasks it can help customers with.

A Time-Efficient Gmail Update

The “Add to Calendar” button’s introduction is quite beneficial for productivity users who rely on Google’s ecosystem. The process of establishing calendar events will require fewer steps, which will help users stay organized and manage their calendars more effectively.

We already know that this feature has the potential to become a go-to tool for both personal and business customers; further specifics will be revealed by April 2025.
