A custom received on this day in 1943, this greeting is given a wai: a prayer-like posture delivered in concert with a bow that goes with the expression of Sawaddee. The gesture altogether is intended to pass on respect and warmth.
Initially begat by language specialist Phraya Upakit Silapasan from the root word, “Svasti,” the Sanskrit word for “blessing” or “well-being,” Sawaddee soon became an official part of the Thai vocabulary.
