Facebook-parent Meta officially released its Twitter competitor ‘Threads’ on Wednesday after announcing its plans for the app just three months ago.
As of Thursday morning, 30 million people had downloaded Threads and received sign-ups, according to the company, including a significant number of brands, celebrities, journalists, and other well-known accounts.
Intent on Threads Early adopters rushed to try out the app and publish their first posts on Wednesday night, making it seem a little like the first day of school. Some questioned whether the app may end up becoming the “Twitter killer.” As of Thursday morning, Threads was both the most popular trending topic on Twitter and the top free app in the Apple App Store.
Threads may be a major threat to Twitter, which has come under fire ever since Elon Musk assumed control of the service in October 2022 and has operated it in a seat-of-your-pants approach. But Twitter has just exposed itself; upsetting users over a temporary cap on the amount of content they may access each day. Additionally, Threads might help Meta grow its empire of popular apps and give it a new ad-supported platform.

The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp has a new app called Threads. The platform resembles Twitter in that it features a feed of mostly text-based posts, while users may also upload photos and videos and engage in real-time chats.
A 500-character limit will apply to messages posted to Threads, according to Meta. Users can respond to, repost, and quote other people’s posts on Threads, just as on Twitter. The software also allows users to share posts from Threads directly to Instagram Stories and integrates Instagram’s existing UI and functionality.
Additionally, thread accounts may be labeled as private or public. Threads automatically verify verified Instagram accounts.
Following the launch, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, stated in a Threads article, “The vision for Threads is to create an option and friendly public space for conversation. We hope to take what Instagram does best and create a new experience around text, ideas, and discussing what’s on your mind.”
In the early hours of Threads’ release, some users did experience a few bugs and problems getting content, but this is to be anticipated when millions of users are simultaneously logging in and using an app.
Users can edit their bio to make it specific to Threads after signing up through their Instagram accounts, keeping their username, password, and account name the same. The list of accounts that users follow can also be imported directly from Instagram, making it incredibly simple for users to start using the app.
But leaving Threads is not nearly as simple. However, the firm states in its privacy policy that “your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.” Users can temporarily deactivate their accounts via the app’s settings section. According to the Apple App Store, several users have expressed worry over the volume of data that the Threads, like Instagram, can gather on users, including location, contacts, search history, browser history, contact information, and more.
According to the company, Threads is accessible on Apple’s iOS and Android platforms in more than 30 languages and 100 countries.
It always seems like a good idea to sign up for a new social networking platform because they are typically free. Making the most of these platforms does have a cost, such as time or privacy, though, and that cost is quickly realized. There is an exit if you’ve got enough of Threads.

You will now be logged out of the app and redirected to the login screen.
Your profile, threads, replies, likes, and followers will be temporarily disabled and hidden from other users when you deactivate your Threads account. Your account won’t be deleted, and you may reactivate it whenever you like by entering your username and password again.
There is currently no way to completely deactivate your Threads account without also permanently deleting your Instagram account. One of the many aspects Threads has to have to compete with Twitter is the decoupling of Instagram from the platform.
Hide your presence on the app by deactivating your Threads account. If you change your mind later, you can always reactivate it. However, you will also need to remove your Instagram account if you wish to permanently delete your account.
Instagram probably won’t allow users to cancel their Threads accounts separately right once, but that could change in the future.
