The Oscar-nominated movie “Moana 2,” which follows a young Polynesian woman who sets out to break an old curse, will be streamed on Disney+ on March 12. Disney fans can now set sail once more with Moana 2, as the streaming release date for the much-awaited sequel has been formally announced by Disney+.
After achieving over $1 billion in revenue at the global box office, the animated movie will debut on Disney+ on March 12.
Following its initial conception for Disney+, Moana 2, which Disney Co-Chairman Alan Bergman changed for a theatrical release, will finally be available on the site on March 12. That is a theatrical window of 105 days.
“Moana 2” was reimagined as a movie with a theatrical release after first being conceived as a Disney+ TV series for streaming. Disney reportedly made the change as a strategic move to increase sales and profitability. It paid off, as “Moana 2” became the third highest-grossing film of 2024 and earned over $1 billion at the box office.
Disney decided to bring Moana 2 to the big screen for $458.8 million domestically and $1.05 billion globally after realizing that the initial movie was a success on Disney+ and instead of keeping any enthusiasm for the sequel at home. The power of the movie not only rekindles the IP’s passion but also spreads it throughout the parks, products, and future generations of fans. For a studio that once fell in love with theatrical day and date on their film titles during COVID with Jungle Cruise, Cruella, and Black Widow before learning the moola is on the big screen, this is a wise move.
The movie “reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Each filmmaker made their directorial debut with “Moana 2,” which was directed by the trio of David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear contributed to the sequel in place of Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote and composed the music for the first movie.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made a comeback as the shapeshifting marine trickster Maui, and Auli’i Cravalho came back to voice Moana. Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, Nicole Scherzinger, Temuera Morrison, and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda were also part of the cast.
Moana 2 was the fourth film from Walt Disney Animation Studio to ever surpass $1 billion, following Frozen, Zootopia, and Frozen 2, and it was the third highest-grossing animated film of 2024.
A third film was hinted at in the sequel. In this sequel, Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho made a comeback. The live-action version of Moana, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2026, will see Johnson reprising the role of the demigod Maui.
Disney reached $5.46 billion at the global box office last year and became the first major studio to do so since 2019, owing to films including Moana 2, Inside Out 2, Mufasa, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Moana 2, which was originally intended to be a Disney+ series, was eventually transformed into a full-fledged theatrical release, which was a significant victory for Disney Animation Studios.
Now, those who were unable to see the movie in theaters or who are itching to relive Moana’s latest adventure may finally enjoy the sequel in the convenience of their own homes.
The movie follows Auli’i Cravalho’s character Moana a few years after she embarked on her first journey.
Moana has accepted her duties as Motunui’s leader, but she takes a risky voyage beyond the known waters after receiving a vision that transforms everything.
She is accompanied by the ebullient demigod Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, who is excited to get back together with his little protégé for yet another exciting journey.
Moana 2, which is directed by Jason Hand, Dana Ledoux Miller, and David Derrick Jr., assembles an experienced team of Disney storytellers.
Derrick, a story artist who previously worked on Encanto and The Lion King, was instrumental in shaping the plot of the sequel.
Miller, a newcomer to animation, made sure the movie maintained the essence of the original, while Hand, a Disney Animation veteran, offered his knowledge gained from more than ten years with the studio.
Moana 2 embodies the magic that has defined Disney Animation for centuries with its stunning animation, poignant yet daring plot, and lively musical score.
With future sequels planned, Disney’s dedication to growing its cherished properties has been strengthened by the success of Moana 2.
Nearly a decade after their first appearance, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) will return in Zootopia 2.
Disney fans can then anticipate Frozen III, which will carry on the enchanted adventure of Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) in Arendelle.
Disney Animation Studios is well-positioned to maintain audience interest in the upcoming years with these eagerly awaited sequels.
The wait is almost over for those who are excited to embark on Moana’s most recent voyage.
Disney+ will begin streaming Moana 2 on March 12 so that families everywhere can enjoy the adored heroine’s most recent adventure whenever and whenever they choose.
