Best Tips for Vertical Gardening in Spring and Summer

There’s never been a better time to start vertical gardening to make the most of your outdoor space as the weather gets warmer. A vertical garden can help you maximize your space without taking away from the areas that are available for entertaining, whether you have a big backyard or a tiny balcony.

Select a Good Location

Gardening is all about “location, location, location,” just like real estate. The secret to success is picking a location that receives the ideal amount of sun for the plants you want to grow. Since most plants prefer full sun, a location that gets at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day will work well. You will need to do some research and use your imagination when choosing what to garden if you don’t have enough room for a vertical garden in a spot that gets this much sunlight.

Add Support Structures

Adding supports like trellises, stakes, or wall-mounted plant holders can help keep your vertical garden in place and make the most of the space you have available, regardless of whether you build your own vertical garden boxes or buy a structure from a store. Make sure your supports can support the weight of your growing plants if you decide to build your own vertical garden.

Choose Your Plants Carefully

Finding the right plants for your structure is essential to making the most out of your vertical garden, even though there are various setups for these areas. Certain plants work better in vertical gardens than others do. In a vertical garden, herbs, strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes, and flowers like nasturtiums or petunias are all great choices. If your scripture permits climbing plants to weave upward without invading other plant space, then climbing plants might also be appropriate. Green beans or peas work well for this, but you can also train squash and even watermelon to grow along a fence or trellis if you provide support for the harvest as it grows.

Pay Close Attention to the Needs of the Soil and Water

Selecting high-quality soil and compost is essential to keeping your plants nourished and moist in vertical gardens, which tend to dry out faster than traditional gardens. Make sure the soil drains well to avoid water logging. This is particularly important for vertical gardening systems, but keep in mind that in hot weather, well-draining soil may dry out too quickly. To maintain the happiness and health of the plants, think about utilizing self-watering Planters or installing a drip irrigation system.
