Amazon will Shut Down the Amazon Appstore for Android and Discontinue Amazon Coins Program in August 2025

Amazon has declared that it plans to shut down its Android app store. Developers will no longer be allowed to list new apps to the Amazon Appstore, according to the e-commerce giant.

We all anticipated this, and it has finally come true. The end of the Amazon Appstore for Android has been officially confirmed by Amazon. The Android Appstore app will be discontinued on August 20, 2025, and all other apps and services will also be stopped. The company has already begun providing developers with this information, and it has already stopped the submission of new apps to the app store.

“Starting 20th August 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device,” said a notification on the company’s support page.

“We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on 20th August 2025. As of 20th February 2025, Amazon Coins are no longer available for purchase,” it added.

Games and apps could be bought on the app store using Coins, which is Amazon’s digital currency.

Amazon has declared that it is closing its Android smartphone app store. According to Amazon’s announcement, developers will not be permitted to submit new apps to the app store. In terms of its history, the Amazon Appstore was introduced to the market in 2021 and promoted as a Google Play Store substitute.

Amazon has made the decision to discontinue the Amazon Appstore for Android and redirect all attention on the App Store that is accessible on Amazon devices, according to the company’s official statement.

The company stated that they want to concentrate more on the Appstore because a significant percentage of their customers only use it on Amazon devices.

Amazon Appstore is about to close

Additionally, the availability of the Amazon Appstore on its own devices, such as the Fire tablet and Fire TV, has been confirmed. In addition, Amazon has chosen to stop the operation of its digital currency program, Amazon Coins.

The platform will return any coins that users have on hand as of August 20. These coins facilitated consumers’ purchases of games and apps from the Amazon Appstore. This is not the first time this has happened, as Amazon just revealed in 2024 that its app store will no longer support Windows devices after March 5, 2025.

This year, Amazon aims to do a lot with its many apps that are already available on the market. Amazon has expanded its Prime Video content portfolio in the Indian market, giving customers other platforms to search for content. And since the Amazon Gaming service has shown itself to be respectable in the past, we can also expect to see improvements in it.

Additionally, the company stated it would refund any coins that remained in a customer’s account following the shutdown. Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices are among the Amazon gadgets that will still have access to the Amazon Appstore.

Amazon Coins discontinuation

The digital currency will no longer be available for purchase on the same day that the company ends the Amazon Coins program. The Amazon Appstore allows users to purchase apps or make in-app purchases with Amazon Coins.

By August 20, users must spend their coins; any balance left over will be refunded.

It is important to note that Android 15 has tightened limitations on sideloaded apps, even if Amazon has not given a reason for discontinuing support for Android devices. Google has also introduced new tools that enable developers to mandate that apps be downloaded only through the Google Play Store, making it more difficult for other app stores to operate.

“We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,” an Amazon representative stated in an explanation of the decision.

Updates can be made to apps, but no new apps will be submitted, the message emailed to developers states. Additionally, the App Store will not allow customers to make in-app purchases.

Who is going to be impacted?

You will be impacted if you depend on Amazon’s app store, as it was designed with Android users in mind. You may always download the apps from Android’s official app store, though, as most of them are available on the PlayStore.

The Amazon Coins program is also ending

The Coins program has been withdrawn by Amazon in addition to the App Store. Users could use the coins as a form of payment to buy purchases on the app store. Coin holders have until August 20 to use them. Amazon will give you your money back if you decide not to use them.

In addition, Amazon shut down the Chinese appstore in 2023, and on March 5, 2025, it will be removed from the Microsoft Store.

The app store only provides a limited number of apps for Android users, thus its closure won’t have a significant impact on many individuals. As part of the Windows Android Subsystem, the Windows version was also expected to include additional apps.
