Accordion: Google Animated Doodle Celebrates Musical Instrument
Google animated Doodle on May 23, 2024 honors the day the accordion, a German-made instrument that Google playfully referred to as a folk musician’s “main squeeze,” was patented.
The Doodle on Google’s landing page this morning features dancers dressed in German costumes, with an accordion playing in the background. The letters ‘G O O G L E’ are seen contracting and expanding while the Doodle moves.
The accordion is credited with being invented by Armenian piano maker Cyrill Demian.
The word accordion originates from the German word “Physharmonikaz,” which is a compound word made up of the words “Physa,” which means bellows, and “Harmonikos,” which means harmonic. Three parts make up an accordion: the bellows, the left-hand keyboard (or buttons) for accompaniment, and the right-hand keyboard for melody. This music console, which is a member of the aerophone family, is controlled by air pressure.

On May 6, 1829, Demian, an Austrian piano maker, applied for recognition for creating the first accordion in history. A few days later, on May 23, 1829, Demian’s musical instrument received an official patent grant.
To be sure, C. Friedrich L. Buschmann, whose handäoline was patented in Berlin in 1822, is also credited by several musicians and scholars. Demian’s accordion was a handäoline modified with five keys and a small manual bellows.
The device was reportedly described as a push-pull accordion in Demian’s patent application. Depending on whether the bellows were pulled or pushed, it produced a different note on each key. In a diatonic scale, five keys would provide a few notes more than an octave, and major chords would be simple to create.
Originally, accordions were constructed with buttons on one side that produced a whole chord. However, as time went on, the German console changed to produce two distinct chords based on whether the bellows were pulled or pushed.
The accordion spread throughout Europe and eventually to other parts of the world as musicians from various nations became aware of it and developed a taste for it.
Over time, the design of this music console evolved to include both piano keys and buttons, but air remains an essential component of the rhythm produced by an accordion.
These days, the accordion is a mainstay at Oktoberfest, which is known for its carnivalesque atmosphere, music, and traditional clothing like dirndls and lederhosens. It can be heard playing in a variety of genres, such as Latino polka, tango, folk music, and Cajun music.
