MCMC approves Telenor’s Digi.Com BHD and Celcom Axiata Berhad merger to develop Malaysia’s biggest mobile service operator
Malaysia’s communications controller on Wednesday supported a consolidation between the mobile operations of Axiata Group Bhd and Norway’s Telenor ASA, in a deal that will frame the Southeast Asian country’s greatest player in the sector. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has endorsed the proposed consolidation between Digi.Com Bhd (Digi) and Celcom Axiata Bhd (Celcom) to make the country’s greatest mobile assistance operator.
Telenor’s Digi.Com Berhad and Celcom Axiata Berhad are Malaysia’s second and third-biggest mobile service operators, separately, and the tie-up will make the country’s top mobile service operators, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement.
MCMC said it has given a notification of no protest after the organizations presented a bunch of undertakings to address contest gives that might emerge from the consolidation.
In a joint statement, Digi.Com and Celcom said undertakings included divestment of 70 MHz of their spectrum and Celcom’s “Yoodo” brand. Moreover, they consented to lay out a different independent business unit for their mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) wholesale business, and position existing products under a solitary corporate brand.
At the point when the consolidation was announced last year, it was assessed the new Celcom Digi Berhad would make a company with a yearly income of around $3 billion and center profitability of $1.4 billion from a subscriber base of around 19 million clients. Digi.Com had a market worth of around $6 billion.
Maxis Bhd is as of now Malaysia’s top mobile services supplier with more than 9.4 million income-creating subscribers.
The companies anticipate that the consolidation should be finished in the last part of 2022, with Axiata and Telenor holding equivalent ownership of 33.1 percent each.
It will currently be dependent upon the endorsement of the Securities Commission, Bursa Malaysia, and shareholders, the organizations said.

The organizations would be all-around set to drive 5G solutions, the statement said. Malaysia plans to carry out the 5G telecommunications spectrum in stages and has set up a unique reason vehicle, Digital Nasional Berhad, to manage infrastructure and network deployment.
Digi.Com shares ascended as high as 7.7 percent while exchanging the stock continued. Axiata’s portions climbed as high as 2.85 percent.
