5 Natural Ways to Clean Your Home

We all like to live in a clean home. However, if you’re sensitive to the chemical ingredients and smells of traditional cleaning products, then a “clean” house might not feel as pleasant. Luckily, there is no shortage of ways you can keep your house clean and fresh without using any chemicals at all!

In this article, we’ll look at five different things you can do to clean your house naturally. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to enjoy a clean house without the use of chemicals.

1. Multipurpose Cleaner

Did you know you can make your own multipurpose cleaner? You can mix it up in a plastic or glass spray bottle and keep it under your sink with the rest of your household cleaners. The recipe is simple. All you need is:

  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 4 to 8 cups hot water

Mix all of the ingredients together and you’re ready to clean any surface in your home. If you don’t like the smell, consider adding Young Living Essential Oils to the mix. You can use oils like lemon, citrus or clove to help kill bacteria or choose one of their blends. This will add a fresh scent to the mixture and make your home feel clean and smell inviting.

2. Olive Oil Furniture Polish

You read that right. You don’t have to cave into chemicals to keep your wooden furniture looking shiny and new. You can use nature’s polish — olive oil! Any standard olive oil will work on your hard surfaces and you can treat it just like furniture polish. Simply dab some olive oil on a rag, rub it into the surface of your furniture and leave it to dry. In no time, it’ll look just like new.

3. Castile Soap

Items like soap, shampoo and laundry detergent can be full of irritating chemicals. If you struggle to find a soap that doesn’t irritate your skin, consider using castile soap. This natural, biodegradable option is incredibly versatile. You can use it as bath soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, dish soap, hand soap and even floor cleaner!

Castile soap is non-toxic but you do typically need to add water to get it working. A ratio of thumb is four parts castile soap to one part water. Some castile soap is sold in concentrated amounts, and for those, you want to use significantly less. Follow the instructions on the package for the best results.

4. Baking Soda

Baking soda is another incredibly versatile staple to keep in your chemical-free home. Namely, baking soda can be used to clean your oven. When it comes that time of year to scrub the dirt and grime off the bottom of your oven, you can dump some baking soda, mix with water and let sit to do the work for you.

This is a great place to replace your chemical cleaners, as the heat from your oven can leach chemicals into your food after cleaning. Simply mix your baking soda with water until it makes a paste, spread that paste on the bottom of your oven, let it sit for an hour or two, then wipe it away and enjoy your non-toxic oven!

5. Bathroom Cleaner

No one likes to see mold and mildew stains in their bathroom, but you also don’t want to use bleach to get them off the tile and other hard surfaces. For this problem, you can use essential oils once again to get the job done. Namely, tea tree oil.

Tea tree oil is a powerful essential oil that has many beneficial properties, but when it comes to cleaning it’s the best for killing mold and mildew. You can mix it with some vinegar and spray it around your bathroom wherever you see mildew growing. Let it sit for about an hour to really soak in, then simply wipe the mildew away and enjoy a clean bathroom.

Cleaning your home naturally isn’t as tough as it sounds when you know what to do. Use these five tips to start creating non-toxic, natural cleaners to use around your home. You’ll feel better and avoid that nasty chemical smell, giving you the peace of mind to relax.
