The 2023 Asian Athletics Championships will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 12-16 July, hosting the largest track and field competition in Asia.
Neeraj Chopra, an Olympic champion, and Avinash Sable, a Commonwealth Games medalist, will not compete for India in the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. Chopra and Sable are currently in another country training for the World Championship schedule in August.
The 24th Asian Athletics Championships will take place from July 12 to July 16 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Tajinder Pal Singh Toor and Jyothi Yarraji, both inter-state champions, were among the best players in the Indian team at the competition.
Before bettering his own Asian and national records with a throw of 21.77 metres at the Nationals, Toor shattered the Championships and Asian Games record at the Federation Cup in Ranchi in May.
Yarraji, the national record holder, set a qualifying time of 12.89 seconds at the Federation Cup 2023.
Both national record holder Jeswin Aldrin and Murali Sreeshankar, who registered a personal best jump of 8.41m leap at the Nationals last week, will compete for India in the men’s long jump competition. The two are recovering from their injuries, according to Adille Sumariwalla, president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). According to Sumariwalla, “They are preparing for the World championships.”
Tejaswin Shankar, who won the men’s high jump bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, will compete in the decathlon event. Recently, though, he has changed his concentration to the decathlon.
Both the javelin thrower Rohit Yadav and the triple jumper Praveen Chithravel have withdrawn from the upcoming Asian athletics championships for various reasons.
A major blow for the nation is the absence of Chithravel, who made three jumps of at least 17 metres this year, and Rohit, who touched 81 metres three times this year and recently recorded his best two throws (83.40 metres at the Federation Cup in Ranchi in May and 83.28 metres at the Inter-state meet in Bhubaneswar in June).
Puripol Boonson, the fastest 100m runner in the world under 18, represents one of the brightest emerging athletics talents to watch for this year. Hosts Thailand is one of nine teams that have participated in all 23 previous editions (the 24th Championships in 2021 were canceled). Puripol may not be running at full strength with an eye towards the Asian Games later this year, though, having pulled up hurt just two months ago during the SEA Games.
Other athletes to keep an eye on include the best long jumper in India, Murali Sreeshankar, the sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri from Indonesia, and the middle-distance runner Tanaka Nozomi from Japan.
The World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Hungary from 19–27 August, are one month after the meet. With that competition looming big, some of the continent’s top athletes may decide to skip Bangkok and concentrate on their preparation for Worlds.
There are no scheduled marathon events. However, athletes in Bangkok will compete in 45 different track and field events.
Eight additional teams have participated in every edition in addition to Thailand, including Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
